Today is Garifuna Settlement day and every Novemebr 19, I get excited to celebrate! My first encounter with the Garifuna people took place in Roatan, Honduras, and it remains one of the most memorable experiences of my travels. It was a Sunday, and the locals kept telling me, “You must go to Punta Gorda and dance with the Garifuna!” “The who?” I asked, to which they replied, “The Garifuna, the indigenous people along the coast.” Little did I know, I was about to immerse myself in one of the most vibrant and authentic cultural celebrations ever!
On Sundays, the entire town gathers, and everyone big or small, tall or short, male or female, dances to the infectious rhythms of Punta. It’s not about how you look or how skilled you are; all that matters is you moving to that beat! The atmosphere was electric, and the cuisine was a feast for the senses. I had Machuca, a rich, flavorful, and filled with fresh seafood stew that had me licking the bowl. The community itself was a vibrant display of color, with hues of Black, White, and Yellow everywhere. I couldn't believ when my guide mentioned that the Garifuna people can be found not just in Roatan, but throughout Central America , something they don't teach in the history books!
