Black Owned Grenada: The Black owned businesses reshaping the nation !

Updated: Sep 15

ree

Never in my life have I questioned a return flight home, but there I was, standing at Maurice Bishop Airport, ready to risk it all for the Spice Island. All I could think was the Caribbean sun kissing my skin, the warm breeze carrying the laughter and the sounds of Soca. I found myself asking: why am I leaving? Grenada had wrapped me in its embrace, and in that moment, it felt like home. Like a place I had always known, always belonged, always longed for.

The warmth of the sun mirrored the warmth of the people, genuine, welcoming, and essential for everything else to survive. Every smile, every 'mawnin' , every chirp from some beautiful bird felt like an invitation to be part of something bigger. Grenada is a place that seeps into your soul and leaves you craving so much more. The richness of the cocoa tea, the oil down you can't refuse, and the energy of a community deeply rooted in purpose, pride, and creativity.

The Spice island isn’t just a destination , it’s a place to live fully, to explore boldly, and create endlessly the kind of life you want. The people, the diversity of the island, the flavors, the entrepreneurship, the intention, it all adds up to something bigger any of us can imagine. And when you visit my beloved ''Greenz'', supporting Black-owned businesses is not just encouraged , it’s a way to be part of the heartbeat of the island itself!

Stay

When it comes to Black ownership in the Caribbean, many assume that most hotels and accommodations are locally owned, but the reality is often different. Large chains have moved into the region, dominating the space. Choosing to stay Black is one of the most revolutionary things you can do on any Caribbean island, it’s a way to put your dollars back into families who are not only building, but preserving legacy and uplifting their local communities.

Grenada is home to many Black-owned accommodations, but I had the chance to explore what I like to call the Golden Triangle (I totally made that up lol) , an area with three unique Black-owned properties, all just steps from one another. Nestled on the breathtaking Grand Anse Beach, these diverse stays offer options for any kind of traveler and gives the perfect combination of charm, culture, and convenience for your ultimate Grenadian getaway. All different, there's something for everyone , I had the opportunity to experience them all.

As someone who’s always searching for connection, yet constantly on the go, Blue Horizons became my home away from home. This eco-friendly hotel didn’t just offer a place to stay, it grounded me. With slow mornings and intentional spaces, I was able to recharge fully, something every traveler needs but doesn’t always get. My introduction to the island couldn’t have been better than through Mr. Arnold Hopkin,

ree

the owner and someone I’m truly honored to call a friend. Quiet yet powerful, Mr. Hopkin is a humble hospitality hero. His daily presence on the property, knowing every pipe, every flower, and every staff member by name, reflects his intention and commitment, a vision that deserves every accolade.

The property has 32 guest rooms, ideal for mid- to long-term stays. With self-catering amenities and sustainability at the forefront, I loved how the space encouraged mindfulness, inviting me to think about who I am as a traveler. Blue Horizons is a haven for nature lovers: above my room, a lookout point became my sanctuary. Each morning at 6 a.m., I’d climb the stairs to catch the sunrise, my daily dose of peace and sanity. Grenada is a birder’s paradise, home to 27 species of birds; I spotted five, and each sighting was a small gift. Every plant on the property blooms, a testament to Mr. Hopkin and the care he’s poured into Blue Horizons over the past 47 years. The hotel is a perfect example of going green in a Blue economy with solar lighting, 25 hives for Blue Horizon Honey, African Palm oil trees, and a thriving garden with pawpaw (papaya), all contributing to a self-sufficient ecosystem.

And then there’s the staff simply incredible. They became my family. On my first night, exhausted from travel, I had 75 calories left to close my fitness rings. Running the property in the dark, I met Mr. Jerry, a gentle giant working security.

ree

He insisted on staying with me to ensure I felt safe until I finished. After that night, our daily exchanges , him bringing fruits, me sharing stories , became a beautiful, authentic rhythm of kindness and care that defines Blue Horizons.

The next generation of the Hopkin family is equally inspiring. Kendra Hopkin-Stewart, Deputy Managing Director and eldest child of Mr. Hopkin, is shaping the future of Grenadian tourism. Past President of the Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association and currently 4th Vice President of the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association, she blends independence, vision, and family legacy seamlessly. Her leadership ensures that Blue Horizons isn’t just a resort, it’s a cornerstone of Grenada’s hospitality landscape.

ree

I happened to be visiting during Mr. Arnold’s birthday, and the opportunity to celebrate him was one I absolutely couldn’t miss. Each day, we spoke about everything, from his family’s deep roots in hospitality to the thought and intention behind every piece of artwork in the accommodation. Mr. Arnold not only loves his country, he's a walking encyclopedia of hotelier knowledge, and anyone striving for success and authentic, high-level service should study him. His hands-on involvement, dedication, and passion are truly inspiring, lessons that simply cannot be taught in a classroom, textbook but only in person by learning straight from the source . This family of pioneers is laying the foundation for another 47 years of excellence, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Although I haven’t stayed overnight at Mount Cinnamon, I’ve visited the property multiple times for meetups, meals, and much-needed me time. Created by hospitality genius Barry Collymore, Mount Cinnamon is a escape that offers vibes and connections you won’t find anywhere else. What makes this property so special is its intentional focus on community both on and off the hotel grounds, through thoughtfully curated programs and events.

My first visit was for a spa treatment, and I ended up spending the entire day there. I was captivated by the modern design and sleek finishes throughout the property. I spent time (and money!) at Canella’s Shop, the on-property boutique showcasing local artisans and designers. I had to put myself on a budget because everything was calling my name, especially the crochet pieces, which perfectly match my style.

ree

The common areas, from the uniquely shaped pool and bar to the beachfront restaurant and volleyball court, are all incredibly welcoming. If you’re not careful, a supposed to be 1-2 hour spa day at Mount Cinnamon can easily turn into a full-day experience, with the beach club and amazing food keeping you happily on-site.

Wellness is taken seriously here. On property, there are endless options to move, recharge, and reset, both physically and mentally. I took Tai Chi, practiced yoga, enjoyed the sunset at the infamous mirror, and even joined the Friday night bonfire. It’s a place where you feel your body and mind thriving simultaneously.

Mount Cinnamon is also a prime spot for people-watching. It’s not unusual to cross paths with individuals shaping culture globally or to have conversations that leave you inspired. Barry Collymore alone has a way of making you ask yourself, “Why not me?”

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Chef’s Table experience at the Flying Fish. If you’re looking for the ultimate date night or a space for a major celebration in Grenada, this is it. The 7-course tasting menu celebrates Grenada’s bold flavors and seasonal ingredients, elevated through refined culinary techniques. Each course is expertly paired with hand-selected wines and crafted cocktails, personally presented by the culinary team. It’s an intimate, unforgettable journey, do not leave without experiencing it.

When it comes to all-inclusive luxury in Grenada, Spice Island is unmatched. Steeped in excellence and legacy, the resort is now under the brilliant leadership of Janelle Hopkin, who is creating a legacy of her own. Renowned for exceptional customer service, the resort truly delivers on every expectation. With 64 luxury villas, guests are welcomed into a world that feels entirely their own.

During my stay, I had the pleasure of staying in the Royal Cinnamon Beach Suite. From the moment I stepped in, I was blown away.

ree

The suite is beautifully curated, offering the perfect balance for those who want to relax indoors and out. Just steps from the beach, I spent hours in my hammock, enjoying the breeze and unlimited libations which are accesible in your room.

While the room itself was incredible, it was the staff and their presence that made my stay. I spent time in the common areas to be closer to them, and they went above and beyond to accommodate every need. I had to beg them to stop calling me Ms. Lewis and their attention to detail was constant! If I wasn’t at the restaurant, they would find me in my hammock to remind me how much time I had left to dine…unless I preferred room service, of course.

One evening, I needed to squeeze in a run, and the team kept the tennis courts lit past closing hours just for me. I had no idea it was about to storm, and even though the rain poured, I ran through it, and at the end, they were waiting with towels. That is true hospitality. Riyah, Mr. Thompson, Zeniya, Junior, Kelan, Lucy, and Donette, you all are unforgettable.

Since the passing of her beloved father, Sir Royston Hopkin, Janelle has stepped confidently into her role. I asked multiple staff why they’ve stayed at the resort so long or why they chose to work at Spice Island, and every answer was the same: because they believe in her. Watching her navigate leadership, motherhood, and honoring her father’s legacy is inspiring. Preserving a family legacy while creating your own is no easy task, but Janelle does it with grace, intention, and excellence.

From the top down, Spice Island delivers an unparalleled experience, proving that luxury, care, and legacy can coexist beautifully.

ESTA Sea

When it comes to cutting-edge solutions for the future, Steve Duncan is a visionary who is truly changing the world. A serial entrepreneur, his latest venture, ESTA Sea, is nothing short of revolutionary. The ESTA Sea Grenada is the only party boat in the world powered by 64 x 500W solar panels, running 22 x 48V 400AH Li-Po batteries, which fuel 2 x 100KW brushless PM motors, with 18KW backup generators and advanced fire suppression systems. Now, the average person might not fully grasp what that means, but I saw it in action—and let me tell you, it’s mind-blowing!

This isn’t just a boat—it’s an experience like no other, combining technology, sustainability, and pure fun. Built by Grenadians, engineered by Grenadians, the ESTA is the ultimate on-water venue. Imagine: the best sound system, LED club lighting, a 12-person Jacuzzi, a 30-foot water slide, LED bars on every floor, and air-conditioned restrooms. With radar, autopilot, depth sounder/plotter/GPS, and a 360° camera system, plus inflatable life rafts, the ESTA can accommodate up to 400 passengers, including a VIP section.

This is not normal—this is next-level incredible! If you’re visiting Grenada, getting a chance to ride or fete aboard the ESTA is an opportunity you absolutely cannot miss. The combination of innovation, sustainability, and pure celebration makes this a game-changer—not just for Grenada, but for the nautical world at large. Follow them here

If you’re looking for a fun and immersive activity to enjoy with anyone you’re traveling with, Tri-Island Chocolate is an absolute must! Aaron is a brilliant entrepreneur with vision, resilience, and an unmatched work ethic, and I loved learning more about him. A chocolate farmer originally from England, Aaron inherited 2 acres of land with 98 cocoa trees from his grandparents—and what he’s done with it is nothing short of inspiring.

Aaron’s expertise spans from the tree to the chocolate bar,

ree

and the variety of products he creates is incredible. I chose the chocolate bar-making experience, where I crafted my own chocolate with my choice of ingredients! It sounds simple, but it’s not—there are so many flavor options, and you really have to awaken your senses to create a perfect combination.

The experience is rich in history—not just of Grenadian chocolate, but of Aaron’s own journey. Learning about his resilience during the pandemic and how he pivoted to serve cruise visitors and Zoom workshops was truly inspiring. His knowledge of Grenadian spices, botany, and fragrance is remarkable. As my chocolate cooled, I joined him in the garden for a smell and sight test, discovering Wax Apple, Green Bananas, and Ylang-ylang, the flower used in Chanel No. 5—also known as “Lady of the Night.”

Tri-Island Chocolate is for everyone, and I promise you’ll want to buy everything! Aaron keeps it in the family, offering a Rastafarian “roots-to-bar” experience taught by his uncle, adding even more depth and authenticity.

If you’re in Grenada, do not miss this sweet adventure it’s delicious and educational.

Grenada Distillery

You might be wondering why I put this under “play” and not “learn.” That’s because Clarke’s Court Rum is a two-part experience that ends at the bar—but whether I was in the factory or the tasting room, I had an absolute ball! Owned by the Neckles family, three generations have worked tirelessly to preserve and grow this Black-owned business.

Your visit begins in the museum portion, but the moment you step into the factory, you’re hit with the intoxicating smell of fermentation. Most visitors walk through quietly, but I wanted to see it all! I spoke to everyone—from the chemists to the mixers—and asked everything, including, “Why do you love working here?” and “What’s your favorite rum?”

Daniel raved about the Black Gold, Zacini loved the Old Grog, Lexanne enjoyed Old Grog and Compass, and Marcelli chose the Special Dark. It was clear the staff were passionate, committed, and proud of their roles—a true testament to a workplace built on legacy and love.

Back in the tasting room, I had the honor of meeting owners Ms. Margaret and Afia Neckles, as well as GM Mr. Simon Green. Ms. Margaret even shared her favorite rum with me, while Afia impressed me with her vision, leadership, and powerhouse energy—reminding me of the many women entrepreneurs I met on the island.

With innovative products like Boozie Ice Cream and a reputation as Grenada’s #1 rum, Clarke’s Court is more than a spirits brand—it’s a legacy, a story of brilliance, and a Black-owned business thriving at the top.

When it comes to farm-to-fork dinner experiences, Chef Belinda Bishop is a culture curator like no other. Her events have the ability to craft meals that spark curiosity, and are as visually stunning as they are delicious if you ever get the chance to attend one of her pop-ups, your life will never be the same. Chef Belinda’s events attract the island’s who’s who, offering not just a high-quality culinary experience, but also an evening filled with inspiring, high-caliber people. Historians, artists, winemakers, and GMs, you’ll leave laughing, learning, and feeling full in more ways than one.

What makes her approach even more remarkable is her dedication to creating space for artists to shine. I had the pleasure of meeting Rennel Joseph, a brilliant Grenadian artist whose work is breathtaking. From painting to sculpture, her creations speak for themselves and can be found throughout galleries, hotels, and restaurants across the island. Seeing her talent on display was inspiring, and it’s a reminder that Grenada’s cultural influence is both profound and rising on a global stage.

Grenada Nutmeg Museum

I absolutely adored this museum, tucked in the countryside, it felt authentic and immersive! I learned so much about nutmeg and was honestly shocked at how many ways this incredible plant touches our everyday lives. Most people only think of the nutmeg seed as a spice, but it’s used in seasoning, perfume, lipstick, and even salami!

Nutmeg, affectionately called “Black Gold,” has been part of Grenada since 1843. The tour takes you through its fascinating journey from Asia to the Caribbean, sharing the stories behind how this small seed became a global treasure. Did you know that Grenada produces 20% of the world’s nutmeg? You simply can’t leave the island without taking some home and all my family requested it so I had plenty.

As someone who loves supporting local, I happily stocked up in the gift shop: nutmeg hot sauce, jelly, medicinal spray, and seasoning, for me , all must-haves! If you’re passionate about history, culture, and the stories behind what we consume, this museum is a must-visit.

House of Chocolate was my very first activity on the island, and from the moment you step through the door, your senses come alive! It’s a smaller museum, but it makes a big impact. I loved the live history of cocoa experience, which engaged all five senses and gave me a deep understanding of the cocoa plant and bean. Most cocoa factories don't buy the actual bean, but this deonstration showed you all the ways you can use it . Contrary to popular belief in my opinion, Grenada produces the best cocoa butter. And in general been scientifically proven to be heart-healthy!

Beyond the immersive experience, there’s a café where you can enjoy everything from ice cream to cocoa tea. Of course, I couldn’t resist the gift shop, and I also enjoyed connecting with other visitors exploring the island. Located in St. George, the entire experience can easily be enjoyed in about an hour, making it a perfect first stop for your Grenadian adventure.

Nobody is sweeter than my Aunt Teresa! Is she my real aunt? No, but she treats me and so many others like family. A giant in her own right, Ms. Teresa Marecheau is the President of the Grenada Network of Rural Women Producers (GRENROP). Through her influence, she has advocated for more resources for women in agriculture and worked tirelessly to ensure women producers receive the equality and recognition they deserve.

From the moment you step onto her farm, you can feel the energy shift. Hardworking and dedicated, Ms. Teresa acquired the land from her brother and has been feeding the island ever since! Supplying some of Grenada’s biggest accommodations with lettuce, eggs, herbs everything, yes EVERYTHING grows on her land. Walking through the farm with her, I marveled at everything from five varieties of lettuce to breadfruit. She even has her own nursery and a couple of chickens who know exactly when to return home after roaming the property.

Her farm is more than just a source of food, it’s a hub of community. For over 25 years, she’s cultivated close to 100 members across 10 countries, helping feed people throughout the Caribbean. Her farm-to-table experiences are not just delicious, they’re educational, inspiring, and necessary. If you stick to a strict schedule, be warned: you’ll get lost in conversation and fresh food. Black farmers, especially Black women farmers, are few in number, and I’m immensely grateful for her dedication to her craft and commitment to helping others thrive.

Self Care

When it comes to Malaika Brooks-Smith-Lowe, you’ll never meet another like her. I had no idea what I was about to experience, but she was exactly what I needed in that moment to find a balance I’d never experienced before. Spice Harmony Yoga Studio is a true gift—not just to Grenadians, but to anyone fortunate enough to feel her family’s energy in any capacity.

ree

My first introduction to a yoga wall was transformative. This full mind-and-body experience is next level. If you’re like me—constantly working, always busy—her class allows you to relax, refresh, and find clarity, helping you understand the best path forward. Malaika doesn’t just work with your body; she guides your mind, your thoughts, and your ability to manifest. I genuinely enjoyed speaking with her, learning about her journey, and hearing her vision for expanding the studio’s impact. A forever customer, Malaika offers a Cool Me Downpost-Spicemas experience in August and the Nourish Retreat in December—an experience I can’t recommend enough.

If you want to achieve calm, clarity, and connection while exploring the Spice Island, this experience is absolutely a must.

He understood my curiosity and often took the long route when I requested detours to explore hidden gems.

I recently tried TiviGen IPTV while looking for a reliable IPTV service and was genuinely surprised by the quality. You can check them out at tivigen.com, and the IPTV subscription setup was quick and easy. Streaming has been smooth with HD IPTV, sports IPTV, and IPTV Arabic channels, and it works well on IPTV for Smart TV and Android devices.

It can be difficult for young minds to grasp concepts and ideas because they come in so many different forms. To fully understand this issue, you need to have a good understanding of most of these things. There are many satisfying options available for students studying in the United States. To take advantage of these opportunities, you'll need to write a lot of high-quality academic essays on a variety of writing topics. But if you ever need help with your schoolwork, you can always use services like "Help with economics assignment".

This is an excellent post, you've explained everything so well! Hoda Kotb has such a classic and elegant style, and this leather jacket is a perfect example of that. It's sharp, modern, and has a timeless appeal. I loved it the moment she wore it on The Kelly Clarkson Show. I was so happy to find this amazing, high-quality version of the Hoda Kotb The Kelly Clarkson Show S06 Leather Jacket at Stardom Jackets. It’s a truly versatile piece for any wardrobe.

Many universities expect students to deliver flawless final research, but not everyone has the time or skills to achieve that. This is where a thesis writing service comes in. With the right thesis help, students can overcome challenges in research design, analysis, and presentation. Skilled thesis writers make sure that the content is original and well-researched. A custom thesis writing service is particularly useful for those who want a paper that reflects their specific academic path and voice.
