The United States Virgin Islands (USVI) holds a special place in my heart! After visiting for the first time in 2024, I found myself there for almost the entire summer, and I was absolutely hooked. From the people to the incredible painkillers (a local cocktail), the tourism board that’s truly killing the game, and the unbeatable island vibes, they had me at hello.
I spent the most time in St. Thomas, where the chickens would wake me up every morning, and where I’d take an early 7 a.m. run just to hear the locals cheer with a friendly Mawnin as I passed by. Cokie Beach and Meagen’s Bay became my regular spots, with sunsets that still take my breath away.
With St. Thomas Carnival taking place in early May and summer right around the corner, here are my favorite Black-owned restaurants in St. Thomas you definitely need to check out!
Stands:
Momma’s Shack : Whenever I travel, I always ask locals if I can eat at their mama or granny’s house. Why? Because I know that’s where the real flavors are, made with love. Momma’s Shack in the Yacht Haven complex is the definition of home-cooked goodness. Despite the heat, I was all in for some soup and johnny cake—perfect comfort food that hit the spot!
Food Trucks:
Kween Vee Smoothies : Every morning after my workout, I’d walk to Emancipation Square to grab a smoothie from Kween Vee’s Food Truck. It's quick, healthy, and full of flavor! While the prices may be a little higher than what you’d pay at home, it's the St. Thomas way of life.
Mr. Big Life Food TruckFor traditional USVI and Caribbean food, this food truck is your go-to. Located in Emancipation Square, it’s perfect for visitors coming off cruise ships, offering a quick and delicious taste of authentic USVI cuisine.
Chi Chi’s True Creole Food Truck : I discovered Chi Chi’s during an early morning run, and I was instantly intrigued. Bright and welcoming, with locals enjoying breakfast, I knew I had to come back for lunch. The catch? Chi Chi closes early, but if you get there in time, the food is absolutely worth it—and the vibe is top-notch with incredible St. Thomas hospitality.
Smoke Up Fusion BBQLocated in a food truck park with 3-5 trucks open daily, Smoke Up Fusion BBQ offers tasty, traditional barbecue plates with all the sides like fries, coleslaw, and rice. It's a popular spot, so get there early to enjoy the flavor and variety.
Fine Dining:
Surf N' Turf Bistro : A relatively new restaurant owned by Dominican chefs, Surf & Turf is a hidden gem in St. Thomas. With great seafood options and a cozy ambiance, it’s perfect for a date night or intimate evening out. Don’t miss the cheesecake—it’s a must-try!
RendezvousLooking for a special spot for a birthday dinner or just a memorable night with your crew? Rendezvous is the place to be. The owner and staff are amazing, and the food is nothing short of outstanding. No matter what you order, it’s all incredible, and the stunning view adds to the experience.
